Uncomfortable Ride

You may not notice this problem at first because it can start subtly. As the shocks and struts wear out, your ride will get bouncier. Eventually, you will notice that it is very uncomfortable to drive or ride in your vehicle. If you suspect the shocks and struts need to be replaced, pay attention to how your car bounces after driving over a bump. It should only bounce once or twice.

Momentum Motion

Another problem that occurs with worn shocks and struts is momentum motion. This means your vehicle responds to how you are driving. An example of momentum motion is your vehicle lurching forward when you slam on the brakes. The shocks and struts should prevent this movement.

Leaking Shocks/Struts

Finally, the shocks and struts will start to leak if they are too old. Both suspension system parts have fluid inside of them that helps them do their job. This fluid is sealed inside the shocks and struts with seals. These seals can break with age and you will end up with oily shocks and struts.

Steering Difficulties

You may also start to have problems steering your vehicle if the suspension system, specifically the steering system, is going bad. In addition to steering system problems, it can be difficult to steer your car, truck, or SUV if the axle is cracked or there’s a problem with the wheels.

Pulling Sideways

In fact, misaligned wheels can also make controlling your automobile difficult. When the wheels are not in alignment, your automobile will pull away from going straight. This means you will constantly have to correct your vehicle’s direction by adjusting the steering wheel.

Low-Seated Corner

Lastly, imagine you drive over a bump and you hear a loud clunk on your front, driver’s side wheel. You’ve just broken the leaf or suspension spring. If you pull over and park your car on a level surface, you will see that the car leans lower above the driver’s side wheel.
